When in Doubt, Start a Business
Hii there!
Welcome to the Sunflower blog! Where I want to bring the beauty of nature to your home. I want to connect the small brands of South Africa to the community and grow with you.
WHERE DID THE SUNFLOWER STAND COME FROM?
The idea came about in December of 2019 when I was driving down the Garden Route. I was exploring new places, meeting different people and listening to some wonderful stories. People running their own business, helping other people, growing their own food.
Then COVID happened and so many people lost their businesses, didn’t have enough food and struggled even more with mental health. On the other hand some good news about air pollution and plastic waste subsiding surfaced. Though these are still ongoing struggles.
So how do I combine everything that I know and love to help people lead a healthier lifestyle, reduce their carbon footprint and connect them to more organic options while at the same time helping our local brands grow?
Then The Sunflower Stand was born, well the idea at least. It took a few months to find the courage to make that leap from IDEA to REALITY.
WAS IT EASY TO START MY OWN BUSINESS?
Despite what everyone says, it was fairly easy.
- Think of a niche or theme and create a name to go with it
- Create a social media presence
- Design a website and setup an email
- Find two or three people with products that you could market and sell
- Start a blog and write about it
But then, you actually have to execute the plan and make it come to life because in reality those easy five steps take quite a bit of hard work and effort.
THIS IS HARD AND TAKES TIME
- Growing your following and subscribers
- Getting people interested in your products to actually buy them
- Partnering with more people who would let you sell their products, even though your social media presence is still relatively new with barely any products to show
- Finding the right topics to blog about while staying consistent
- Setting up that perfect website that’s safe, market friendly and connected to your email
After many hours, back and forth emails, phone calls and motivation sessions I’m halfway – no – a quarter of the way there. Yay to the entrepreneur in me! And super excited to officially launch my online store and blog.
